The ALVINLEEART.COM DIGITAL COLOR CHALLENGE has been concluded and we have come to terms with the five finalists by our board of judges. There were a plethora of submissions to review and after much consideration and many great entries later these are the pieces of work that we found were not only well executed but stood out from the crowd. We want to thank you all for your generous submissions and hard work put towards this contest, it was greatly appreciated! Three of these finalists were actually featured earlier during the competition and still remained in the running for the grand prize. Congratulations for making it on to the voting session, your work speaks for itself! We apologize for the delay of the announcement of our finalists but as you can understand we had hundreds of submissions to review and as the deadline drew near the competition grew more intense. It was a difficult decision to make as we butted heads, argued for specific submissions and debated for days but I hope you are pleased with our final selection.
Vote for your favorite submission now!

@Edwards: I’m only calling it as I see it. I tried to be as gentle as possible but I’m sorry if you feel crushed. I realize that some of you put your heart and soul into this, which is why I’ll likely be more cautious on the critiques from here on in. The biggest no-no was the fact that you started changing the line art, ie; Urien’s face(chin especially).
Anyway, I think I dove to far into this critiques stuff, so I’m gonna back away gracefully from doing anymore of these. Alvin likely won’t be doing anything like this, and don’t take my word for it either. It’s my opinion, and doesn’t reflect Alvin or any other comic artist who may see it completely differently.

Hey Alfred,
I just wanna thank Alvin and yourself for having this contest. I had a blast coloring this piece and it gave me an opportunity to try out some new things.
Like most people, I don’t necessarily agree with some of the final choices, but there are a few really good ones in there. I particularly liked the two toned one by Cobos.
If you get a minute, I’d love to know what you and Alvin thought of my submission and if you had any pointers for me. Thanks!

Akuma was actually one of the few I spent the least time on actually. But I did try to do him justice as he is my favorite one. You’re right about that lol.
Gentle? You’re kidding me right? Just saying Alvin didn’t like it right off the bat just crushed my heart man. Literally. I spent 2 weeks on this thing and to just look at my work like that is a huge insult to me. It wasn’t easy getting up everyday spending hours upon hours on this. I almost wanted to give up at times, but I just kept pushing it to the best of my ability.

@Andrea Errico: Ok really last one for today. Andrea, there’s no much of anything wrong with yours. I guess it was just a little too busy. If you pull yourself back from the piece, and look from far, it gets really busy and you can’t really focus on any particular character. A little less of the paint splat effects. That’s where you have to make a judgement, comic art needs to have some appeal from far and needs to look catchy…

@Cheungkinmen: Two words. Too dark. Your shadow cuts were big and too intrusive and blocked characters definition. Half of Chun-Li’s and Ibuki’s face is black. The weird part was that there’s so much shadow but very little highlight cuts. Your color palette was limited (dark). Not in the worst pile though…

@Nixu: thank you so much for the appreciation.
@Alfred an Alvin: Hey guys I’m glad for the five finalist, but at the same time I’m a bit displease to not be in the final. I respect the choose of Alvin and I’m sure he choose those who have the best idea and impact but I would like to have some critics or know what you think about my work. What I should do or what I did wrong.
By the way thank you again for give us this opportunity.

Hey Alfred, just wondering, mine did ok ?
, I hope it’s not in the “worst” pile, heh.

@Ron Edwards: Seriously, I thought was was being gentle. LOL Anyway, don’t take it the wrong way, your piece was far from the worst, and it has good things going for it. On further inspection, Akuma looks as though he’s your favourite character out of the bunch and I could tell you were going nuts with him(unfortunately everyone else wasn’t nearly as good). He looks the best in the piece and almost looks like a 3D render, but that aside, you can do that on your own artwork, but as a colorist it’s best never to do something like that.

@Cleverblue: thank you so much for appreciations. I hope too there will be another contest.

Congrats to those who made it!. I still need to practice, lol.

Hey thanks for the earlier post about what you liked and disliked about featured pieces! And I’d love to hear one for mine too, similar to Mikey D’s when it comes to questions, even if it’d be harsh (and sorry again for posting the wrong file, OTL). I can wait, thanks for your time!
And this whole discussion seems even more heated than the voting, lol!

Holy crap what a slap in the face! lol. Oh well, I know it looks good so whatever the case. I don’t regret making the decisions I made at all. Next time around if another contest is held I’ll try to refrain from drastically changing the lines.
Thanks for letting me know

@Cleverblue: I like your entry very much. I actually prefer the reddish tone part (test2) more then the “black” one
